A former senior intelligence analyst sees the war on Hamas expanding well beyond Israel and the Gaza Strip.
Israel will kill Hamas leaders across the Middle East to prevent the Gaza-based terrorist organisation from attacking the Jewish state again, a former senior intelligence analyst and defence department official said.
Palestinians look for survivors under the rubble of destroyed buildings following Israeli airstrikes.“Many of the key supporters of Hamas aren’t in Gaza,” he said in a phone interview. “It is very likely Israeli and other operators will essentially capture or destroy some of those people, no matter where they are. I don’t think they are beyond the reach of the Israelis.”
Instead, Israeli soldiers have been forced to slowly search for tunnels and try to kill Hamas fighters inside them, while avoiding booby traps, he said. The length of the tunnels is unclear, but some estimates put them at 300 kilometres to 500 kilometres.Israel has attacked Gaza City from three directions, according to analysts, but may have not penetrated the urban area, which was home before the war to an estimated 800,000 Palestinians.
