The Israeli military said it had targeted Hezbollah's central headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs in an attack that shook the Lebanese capital and sent thick clouds of smoke over the city. The news outlet Axios cited an Israeli source as saying Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was the target of the strike on Friday local time and that the Israeli military was checking if he was hit.
It leads a multi-party alliance that holds just under half the seats in Lebanon's parliament. Hezbollah is listed as a terrorist organisation by countries including Australia, the US, Israel, Germany and the UK. The European Union lists only its military wing as a terrorist organisation. However, Hezbollah itself makes no distinction between its political and military wings.
