Thomas Hand heard gunshots on Saturday morning about 7am, and immediately thought of his eight-year-old daughter, Emily. Hand was at the Be’eri Kibbutz in Israel when Hamas militants carried out a bloody siege. Hamas militants entered Israel via land, air and sea as Israelis were wrapping up seven-day-long celebrations for the Jewish festival of Sukkot. Emily was staying with a neighbour in the settlement — about three miles from the Gaza border — at the time of the siege.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has launched retaliatory attacks on Gaza, vowing to “destroy” Hamas. The air strikes have hit residential buildings, refugee camps, medical centres and mosques. At least 1400 Palestinians have been killed and 6000 injured. Israel has also tightened its blockade on Gaza, cutting off food, water and electricity to about 2.3 million people who live there.
