Private ownership of wild tigers creates health issues for the animals and doesn't help conservation, since it's nearly impossible to confirm their lineages.
These animals often start out as pets, says Tim Harrison, director of Outreach for Animals. By the time they are six months old or so, their owners begin to realize they can’t keep up with the animals’ health needs or handle them as pets.
These subspecies have evolved different adaptations, like coat thickness and coloration, to survive in their respective environments — and, because of their geographic distinctions, have never crossbred., backyard tigers aren’t a viable solution for preserving the tiger gene pool.Most conservationists and tiger rescues agree that backyard tiger purchase and breeding from private owners needs to cease. But a report published this year found that the U.S. accounted forreported from 2003 to 2012.
Currently only five states — Alaska, Louisiana, Hawaii, Washington and Oregon — have a big cat private possession ban. The rest haveof regulation, ranging from registration requirements to zero requirements for housing big cats.
