Eastern suburbs property developer Michael Teplitsky has been ordered by the NSW Supreme Court to repay $11.15m – plus seven years’ interest – which was “cleaned” by since-jailed blackmailers through his companies.
Unbeknownst to the tax fraudsters, the police were already on to them when one of the Plutus Payroll conspirators, Daniel “Big D” Rostankovski, threatened to tip off authorities about the tax fraud unless he was given $25 million.Aiding him in his blackmail scheme was former bankrupt property developer Daniel Hausman, who knew the perfect person through whom they could launder the blackmail funds.
In the months before the May 2017 arrests, $24.2 million in blackmail funds received from Plutus Payroll went into the trust account of lawyer Sevag Chalabian, who has since been jailed for a maximum of 12 years for a single count of money laundering.The judge noted Chalabian had used the term “window dress” for documents he had created to make it appear that Teplitsky was buying out the interests of two others in a Surry Hills property development, when the source was the blackmail funds.
Last week, Justice Nixon found Teplitsky had “assisted Mr Rostankovski in the breach of his fiduciary obligations” and did so knowing that Rostankovski’s actions were “dishonest and fraudulent”.
