A close friend of the Australian teacher who unwittingly ingested rat poison while on exchange in Taiwan has told Sky News Australia what happened at hospital and an alarming text message exchange between the pair.

The family of Queensland teacher and language student Alex Shorey, 24, raised $200,000 for him to be brought home on a medevac flight after he ingested the rat poison superwarfarin while studying in Taiwan last month.

Ms Chen said she suspects Alex was poisoned more than once, given his fluctuating condition over more than a month.“What happened between the end of March and early April? Ms Chen met Mr Shorey in February - when the Towoomba-native successfully applied for an English teaching job, as he completed his university exchange in Taipei.A recording of one of his Zoom classes shows primary school-aged Taiwanese children actively engaged with a lesson featuring occasional off-the-cuff jokes. On March 27, he told her he’d been feeling unwell, saying he had severe stomach pains and had been bleeding continuously from his nose.

In text messages to Ms Chen seen by Sky News Australia he said: “I’ve been peeing blood for a long time now. I’m going to the specialist today for another check up” The pair are believed to have met at the end of 2022 and Mr Shorey used her home to conduct his online lessons.Investigators are said to believe there were inconsistencies in her testimony, including her claim of having a deceased husband.
