I had one of them on Wednesday.
spent Wednesday walking with Simmons on the third last day of his charity walk as he climbed into the Blue Mountains, joined by Wests Tigers identities Tim Sheens, Warren McDonnell and John Skandalis, and Penrith favourites Greg Alexander and Paul “Nobby” Clarke. He’s trained for months and walked up to six hours a day in practice, and then on the very first day of the walk when he trucked 38km alongside Brad Fittler, Simmons ended up with blisters. He’s been battling them ever since.
When the idea of a charity walk to raise awareness about dementia and funds for its research was suggested, Simmons told friends how much he would like to raise. The current tally stands at more than $520,000. “People will stop their cars on the highway, jump out, run to the bus and throw money through the window and then yell at you to take a photo with Roycey before jumping back in their car. It makes you emotional thinking about it.”After reaching his designated mark each day, Simmons will stop for a little treatment on his body and then head out to entertain guests at whatever town he’s stopping in for the night.
