The Kremlin announces almost 100 orcas and beluga whales will be released from their icy prison, but it is a process that could take years as each individual animal is re-adapted to life in the wild.
After international outcry surrounding what has come to be known as Russia's"whale jail", authorities have announced almost 100 whales will be released from their icy prison. The Kremlin said it wasn't possible to release the animals during the icy winterBut the Kremlin has said freeing the 11 orcas and 87 beluga whales is a process that is expected to take years.
Animal welfare groups say the whales were held in cramped, cruel conditions and were intended for sale to aquariums and Chinese buyers. The"whale jail" is located off the Okhotsk Sea in Russia's far east, some 7,000 kilometres east of Moscow. French explorer and founder of The Ocean Futures Society Jean-Michel Cousteau said that with experts' help, each individual whale is now known and efforts will be made to re-adapt every one"to be released naturally in the environment".
