Tropical Cyclone Esther has made landfall near the border of NT and Queensland as a category 1 system.

The Robinson River community is the focus of emergency preparationsThe system made landfall at 12pm AEST.

"We are expecting the winds to increase this afternoon as it makes landfall so we are expecting wind gusts of up to 100 kph, heavy rainfall and also quite large storm tides as well so certainly the weather is intensifying across that part of the country," Mr Howe said.Mr Howe said communities further inland like Burketown would start to see the winds"really pick up and heavy rains developing" as the cyclone started to move inland.

BOM is also warning gale force winds may extend further west to coastal communities between Port Roper and the NT-Queensland border and to adjacent inland areas including Doomadgee, Century Mine, Robinson River, Borroloola and Cape Crawford today, depending on the movement and intensity of tropical cyclone Esther.
