AFL: Tom Green could come under scrutiny from the MRO after getting into a stoush with Harley Reid

West Coast coach Andrew McQualter has backed his fiery young gun Harley Reid, describing the No.1 pick as the “ultimate competitor” after the 59-point loss to GWS on Friday night. Reid was involved in a number of scuffles throughout the night, starting with Ryan Angwin and Giants skipper Toby Greene in the first term.

He didn’t like something Harley’s done there,” AFL great Dermott Brereton said after Reid was left lying on the Optus Stadium turf.Speaking after the match, McQualter said he loved what he saw from his rising star on a tough night for the Eagles.“Potentially lost his attention a couple of times which we’ll keep working with him. “He’s an ultimate competitor. If we can get every player to compete like Harley and want go about their business like that we’d be happy.”While McQualter was unclear on what sparked the confrontation between the two midfield bulls, he was adamant it was all fair play – despite the game being stopped after a Green “swinging arm” dropped Reid.“I think it’s great – we want to see that and we want to see it in the right spirit. “It’s awesome. It’s what footy’s about – as long as it doesn’t cross a line. I love the competitiveness of the game. I hope all of our players do.”Giants coach Adam Kingsley didn’t believe Green “lost his cool” in the battle with Reid, despite vision showing the GWS star getting in the face of the young Eagle immediately once he was cleared to play on by medical staff in the third term.“We didn’t talk about getting under skin … All in all I thought we did pretty well on him.“I didn’t notice anything where he was frustrated or lost his cool.”The first had Reid making contact with Green’s ribs at a centre stoppage before Green then fired back at a contest on the wing. It was immediately after that blow that the two came together again once Reid was cleared to stay on the field.Source: Getty Images “Tom Green would have gone back to him right now and said ‘Mate, you threw the first one at the centre bounce’. He’s pointed at him and said ‘You throw em, you’ve got to accept it as well’,” Brereton added.“If the umpires don’t see that, whatever you give, you can expect you’ll get it back.” Both players ended up in their side’s best, with Green racking up 35 disposals and nine clearances. Reid finished his night with 24 touches and seven clearances.
