The rally showed there is nothing more dangerous to the Trump campaign than when he chooses to ad lib
could not save himself from himself in Dayton, Ohio. Rallying his supporters at the beginning of what – by November – will be America’s longest head-on presidential campaign in the country’s modern history, he bestowed a fresh gift on his rival, President
Then, without any obvious connective tissue to his thought process, he continued: “If I don’t get elected… that’s going to be the least of it, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole country.” To be fair, Trump had trouble with the teleprompter in the stiff Ohio winds. After threatening on multiple occasions not to pay the company that had supplied it, he largely abandoned his prepared remarks and went off-piste.
He went on to pledge that he will spend the next seven months “making the case for how Americans are better of than four years ago, how we got through the pandemic, turned around the economy, re-established American leadership in the world… all without encouraging the American people to inject bleach”.Later, Biden’s campaign described the former president as “a loser who… doubles down on his threats of political violence”.
As the cherry blossoms prepare to make their first appearance of the year in Washington, Trump can be increasingly confident that he will not face criminal trial anywhere before the first frosts of the autumn. In every jurisdiction – New York, Georgia, Washington and Miami – the timetable for his trials keeps slipping.
