A clean-up mission is in full swing after an accident caused a container to crash down onto a barge containing diesel fuel, destabilizing the vessel and causing it to sink.
The Emergency Operations Committee is working to limit the risk to the environment. Meanwhile, members of the official nature reserve authority and Ecuadorian Navy are working with the Galapagos National Park to limit the damage to the natural environment.
A similar event took place in 2001. The spill was dubbed "one of Galapagos' worst disasters" by Ecuador's environment ministry, reported. Around 243,000 gallons of diesel fuel was originally released into the water after a tanker ran aground on San Cristobal Island.
