When all the maths was done at the end of day two there were four Australians in the top 12, Cameron Smith was at the head of the field and the three others were well-placed to challenge on an Old Course which has been unusually hard and bouncy for the 150th Open Championship and seemingly provided them all with a flavour of home.
Scott was a beneficiary of the drizzle which softened the greens slightly and was another to go bogey-free in a round featuring seven birdies to finish at seven under while Lucas Herbert and Min Loo Wee were both a shot behind him. Brad Kennedy joined them for weekend play for the first time in what is his fourth Open after a level-par round saw him remain at four under while Jason Scrivener will start at one under along with Anthony Quayle.
“I think being off late again tomorrow afternoon it’s obviously going to be a bit firmer for me, more like the first day. So I would say it’s going to be pretty brutal out there. I think there’s going to be a few more gnarly pins, and I think being smart is definitely going to be the key to staying at the top of the leaderboard.”
Dustin Johnson, who was round with Scott in the morning and finished at nine under, will partner the Masters champion and world No1 Scottie Scheffler and Scott will play with Patrick Cantlay of the US on what is a high-quality leaderboard which promises to provide a high-octane weekend.“I just need to go out and play my game and play my golf over the next two days and that’s all I can do,” McIlroy said.
