Sky turns deep red on Victorian coast once more as fire threat flares back up
Sandy Beltrame from the Omeo Caravan Park said about 150 people were sheltering at the local recreation reserve as she and other residents prepared to defend their homes.
Authorities had been warning communities across Victoria's declared disaster zone to evacuate the area before todayThis afternoon, five evacuation notices and more than a dozen emergency warnings were in place in the state's east and north-east. Mr Gillham said residents at Cann River, who were urged to evacuate this week, were"essentially isolated" now as fire moved towards them from the east.

State of emergency declared in NSW as thousands flee fire-threatened zones | Sky News AustraliaA state of emergency has been declared for all of NSW, starting on Friday and lasting for one week, as thousands of tourists and residents attempt to leave the state's South Coast ahead of worsening conditions on Saturday.\n\nRural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons har urged people to leave the impacted areas if they can, saying authorities are anticipating “very difficult” conditions over the weekend.\n\n“So we’re going to have a very long, difficult day of hot, dry winds, dominating out of the north, north-west before a southerly change emits.\n\nIt is going to be a very dangerous day. Numerous out-of-control fires burning across Victoria | Sky News AustraliaAuthorities are fighting an uphill battle against bushfires -with fears hot and windy conditions could merge blazes in Victoria — threatening properties and lives. \n\nA southerly change is expected to provide some relief later in the afternoon but could backfire, bringing lightning strikes and erupting more blazes.\n\nAuthorities have revised the number of missing persons down by seven to 21.\n\nSo far 800,000 hectares of land has been burnt across the state — with a State of Disaster declared for six local government areas.\n\nEmergency services have warned people to get out of fire zones while they can while as escape routes could be hit by fires at any time. \n\nA number of isolated areas with people stuck on-site remain inaccessible.\n\nA total fire ban is in place to north and east Victoria.
