‘It’s sad’: Aussie cricket legend’s big call on future of iconic ground
Staff WritersAustralian cricket legend Allan Border has backed a growing campaign to replace the iconic Gabba stadium in Brisbane with a new state-of-the-art venue.

Picture: David ClarkHowever, Brisbane’s iconic venue is absent from this list, a situation that has led Border, who is immortalised at the ground in bronze, to publicly support the need for a new stadium in the city.told the Queensland masthead“A brand new 60,000-seat stadium suits rugby, cricket, Aussie rules, and the Olympics, and the Gabba becomes housing.
Border acknowledged the challenges faced by Cricket Australia in this uncertain landscape, expressing understanding for their decision to leave Brisbane off the Test match roster.“It’s sad, but they’ve got to have some certainty, probably over the next four years, if they can use the Gabba or not.” Queensland Sport Minister Michael Healy has assured the public that negotiations with Cricket Australia are ongoing, although he confirmed that fans could only be sure of the previously announced Test matches against India and England coming this summer.
