Bieniemy is locked in. He knows the stakes. If he resurrects the Commanders offense, what excuse could keep him from becoming a head coach?
Bieniemy’s latest stop continues a life of learning, adjusting. His family moved from New Orleans, where life was lived in Black and White outposts, to the technicolor landscape of Los Angeles, when he was 10. Yet he turned down a scholarship offer from USC to go to Colorado, a thousand miles away and with little diversity. He, wanted to go back home.
“I know everybody sees me as a tough, hard-nosed coach. Some guys you can get on. You may hear me yelling; I may be yelling at the offense. But certain guys I know, you know what? Let me make sure I pull this guy aside and talk to him. ‘Cause certain guys can handle certain things. … You want to make sure they’re making the appropriate changes, but you also want to make sure you can adapt to that person.”in 1991, he quickly realized how much he didn’t know about offense.
“And so, going through those installs as a rookie, you’re sitting back and going, ‘Man, what is this? I’m a running back. I just want to run the damn ball.’ But the good thing about that: I was surrounded by a bunch of older guys — Marion Butts, Rod Bernstine, Ronnie Harmon as well — and they taught me the game.”, the Chiefs. He has made a slew of running backs better, and he was the oil in the engine that became Kansas City’s offensive behemoth.
