One backbencher said: “I don’t think Ben Wallace wants it even, though lots of people are talking about him as a kind of caretaker Michael Howard figure. If we got Rishi, I think actually that will be worse because you’d get half the party that wouldn’t back him. Or you get Boris – and there is no doubt in my mind that Boris will be in the final two of MPs if went through a leadership election again. But we cannot do that.
It is understood, however, that talks between potential challengers about working together have not got off the ground. “No one can get their egos in check,” an MP concluded. There is also simmering anger at the tone struck by Ms Truss’s No 10 during recent weeks: aides working on behalf of the Prime Minister told newspapers that Sajid Javid was “shit”, Michael Gove was “sadistic” and internal critics of the leader were secretly dedicated to reversing Brexit.
