It is now timely to start the inevitable and essential royal commission or judicial inquiry into the pandemic.
The tumult, the eye-watering cost, the ruined businesses, the grotty shuttered shopfronts, the ruined dreams and loved ones gone – none of these memories are avoidable. We will not pretend it did not happen, but we relish the chance to leave it behind. Now the emergency has passed, we need to take stock, to assess what happened, to measure and importantly, to judge.
The terms of reference of a royal commission or inquiry must be broad and comprehensive. In addition to a strong judicial chair the panel must include medical expertise as well as input from someone with detailed knowledge of the social and economic impact of the pandemic. The inquiry ought to be national, but absent of any decision on the cusp of a federal election, the states should get started regardless.
