And once I started shopping for placemats , I regretted not using them all the time. Maybe this is me officially turning into my grandmother, but now that I have a kid and grown-up furniture, I can see the appeal. It turns out that in addition to being kinda pretty, placemats are incredibly practical. They don’t take up much space; they protect your table without fully hiding it; and they’re easier to shake off, wipe down, or throw in the wash than a tablecloth.
