“That empowered all of us to manage our own risk,” said Mark Woolhouse, Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh. The Government has also scaled back on Covid surveillance and testing, inevitable given the huge sums of money spent at the height of the pandemic, but consequently making it harder to react rapidly to new Covid variants. A relatively new sub-variant, BQ.1, has been increasing considerably in recent weeks but scientists are not alarmed given what we went through last year.

“Covid-19 isn’t going away. It’s going to be some kind of health problem for the rest of my life and beyond. There’s no ‘end point’ in the sense that it will suddenly disappear. What the end point will look like then is we don’t treat Covid any differently than we do a raft of other seasonal respiratory infections that we’ve all been dealing with all our lives.

“But we’re literally talking a lifetime before we’ve reached that point,” said Professor Woolhouse. “And by then I don’t know if we’ll still see the vaccines. It maybe that Covid-19 behaves like many other different types of coronavirus circulating, which don’t prove a particular problem.
