From recommended foods to eat during the second trimester of pregnancy to introducing shared family meals to toddlers, the Feeding Healthy Future study works to track and support children's nutrition over 1,000 days.
A Canberra program is providing mothers with nutritional guidance to help them navigate the overwhelming volume of content available that can offer inconsistent advice.
Mothers like Ms Maye meet for three, one hour sessions at three crucial stages of their child's development, all of which are free to attend. The Feeding Health Futures program is run by Nutrition Australia ACT, as part of the government's Healthy Canberra Grants initiative. Common myths are also dispelled, such as the idea that pregnancy means mothers need to 'eat enough food for two people', which is not the case.
"You get bombarded with so many things and really you just got to go with your gut and intuition sometimes and really helps you build that," Ms Maye said.It's the ultra-processed milk powder intentionally marketed as a follow-on to breastfeeding or infant formulae. But the evidence suggests toddler or transition milks are unnecessary at best and harmful at worst.
