A period police drama where right and wrong are consistently clouded by history, perspective, and ulterior motives,unfolds with a friction between contrasting paths. Navajo police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn , a tribal officer overseeing Navajo country in the dusty northern reaches of Arizona, sees himself serving his people and community, but some of those same people call him a “traitor” because he’s a figure of official authority.

It was worth it. While there is some push and pull between the tight momentum of a crime thriller and the well-observed sense of community and shared heritage that the storytelling reveals, this is a series that puts genre pieces together with insight. The first season turns on two crimes that matter to different lawmen.

College-educated, like Leaphorn, but away from the Navajo Nation for years, Chee is diligent but dubious – the traditional beliefs and knowledge that Leaphorn and his sergeant, Bernadette Manuelito , include in their official work looks like superstition or worse to him.
