Scammers are impersonating genuine companies and advertising low-effort jobs that purport to pay well, with culturally and linguistically diverse communities being disproportionately targeted.

Police say scammers are advertising jobs that pay well with low effort, such as conducting surveys, reviews or online bookings .For targeted scams, people from CALD communities accounted for almost 12.7 per cent of reported losses in 2023, according to the ACCC.

“I am the kind of person who does not shop online, does not pick up calls from unknown numbers, and thinks twice about spending even $5. It is still a shock and disbelief for me that I fell prey to these scammers,” the young mum, who is of Indian origin, told SBS Punjabi. In just the last three months, police say there has been a significant increase in reports, with 15 victims coming forward, reporting to have lost over $400,000 collectively. In Sadhvi’s case, recruiters posed as World of Hyatt representatives and she received a letter purporting to be from the firm with the signature of their CEO.Sadhvi said that after she contacted the police, she was told the letter was a fake document not issued by the World of Hyatt.After raising complaints with her recruiters about not getting her money back, Sadhvi said she was asked to send payments to help 'unfreeze' her accounts.
