Alligator snapping turtles sightings have been reported for years at Buffalo Bayou, a Houston man recently got to see one up close.
"It was not happy," Sosa said. He knew the turtle was a threatened species and immediately tried to remove the hook while trying to remain as safe as possible. Sosa said he tried to use a special hook remover but when the turtle made its way to the bank, it anchored itself into the sand and was forceful enough to pull Sosa.
Sosa eventually wiggled the hook out and the turtle immediately went back into the water. Although alligator snapping turtles regularly mess with Sosa's fishing lines while he fishes along Buffalo Bayou, he's never actually hooked one or has seen one that size. He didn't have a scale with him but he figured the turtle was well over 100 pounds., alligator snapping turtles are the largest species of freshwater turtles and typically weigh between 155 and 175 pounds.
"We unfortunately find alligator snappers in the bayou dead every year that have been entangled and drowned in fishing line," Gray said.
