Rugby league legend Ron Coote, who won premierships with both the Sydney Roosters and the Rabbitohs, has lost his South Coast home in the town of Lake Conjola, north of Ulladulla NSWfires
"We had pumps and fire hoses, we had to use the water out of the swimming pool," Mr Coote said toldHe had prepared the eaves of the house for the fire, but the flames reached the home regardless.
While Mr Coote battled to save the home, which he had lived in since 1984, Mrs Coote's daughter Natalie told her to run to the water. "It was really scary, and my daughter Natalie said, 'Mum, you've got to jump in the water'," Mrs Coote told theMrs Coote, in her 70s, Natalie and their companions were forced to swim for an hour as the flames blanketed the shoreline.
