Police have begun investigating the cause of a fatal house fire in Melbourne’s northwest on Sunday morning after a body was found in the wreckage.

Victoria Police have launched an investigation into the cause of a fatal fire in Melbourne 's northwest after fire crews found the body of a deceased occupant inside a burnt-out home.

Residents of nearby properties were evacuated to safety as 30 firefighters aggressively battled to bring the fire under control and prevent it spreading to a three-storey building next door.
