The leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, Giorgia Meloni, is tipped to become the country’s first female prime minister.

Italians are set to go to the polls following the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

She has served as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party since September 2020 and is known to have ambitions to lead her country.Meloni, who was first elected to office in 2006, founded the right-wing Brothers of Italy party alongside fellow politicians Ignazio La Russa and Guido Crosetto in 2012.

Last year she refused to take part in Draghi's "national unity" government, and the move has proved to be beneficial for her party. If her party is victorious, Meloni would be in pole position to become prime minister but could also nominate someone else from her camp to lead.Pollsters say conservative parties are well placed to win for the first time since 2008.
