After all, we’ve been through years of gender discriminatory social conditioning, explicit or subtle.That women are better at nurturing. That women should care more about their looks. As Australia marks International Women’s Day on Friday spare a thought for the homemakers and working mums in China still enduring outdated attitudes about their place in the world, writes Cheng Lei.
Even the one-child policy helped to a certain extent, because where the child was a girl, she was given just as much educational resources as a boy. In recent years there’s a perceived rolling back of gender equality. Old attitudes about “femininity” are making a comeback. When I worked in China, one New Year’s Eve I was ecstatic that I was able to get two fantastic guests for the final show of the year – it just happened that they were female.I love that where I’m working now, gender doesn’t come up as an issue.
Like the young visually impaired Chinese woman who became a makeup artist – going against the grain. Massage is the main profession for the 17 million visually impaired people in China.
