SF Giants: J.D. Davis is finding his identity again after rough year with Mets
SAN FRANCISCO — J.D. Davis was penciled into the fifth spot as the designated hitter against Rockies’ right-handed starter German Marquez on Tuesday night. Perhaps an inconsequential event to outsiders, but significant for Davis.
“I remember sitting down with Billy Eppler at the beginning of the year and he promised 400 at-bats and that he wasn’t going to trade me,” Davis said. “There was a lot of speculation about me being traded so he pulled me to the corner and said ‘Hey, we’re not trading you. I feel like we can get you at least 400 at-bats.’ ”The Giants, who traded Darin Ruf for Davis at the deadline, aren’t afraid to use Davis against right-handed pitchers. He’s batting .
He’s batting .271 with an .855 OPS and six home runs in 41 games in San Francisco, culminating in his third career four-game hit on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The heavy platooning in San Francisco made Davis uneasy about the trade at first. He feared he’d re-live his old problems.
