With just a month to go until the Nov. 8 election, Vance was the headliner at Franciscan University of Steubenville’s “Restoring a Nation” conference.

J.D. Vance speaks during the "Restoring a Nation" conference at Franciscan University of Steubenville on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022. STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Republican Senate candidate J.D. Vance spoke to a couple hundred ideological allies while keynoting a conservative, Catholic academic conference in Eastern Ohio Saturday night, capping a day of more typical campaign activities with a month to go until the Nov. 8 election.

The movement and its affiliated offshoots, which have picked up steam in the aftermath of the election of Donald Trump as president, is broadly politically controversial among those who view it as potentially authoritarian or intrusive. Early Saturday, Vance similarly held traditional campaign stops of his own in Newark, Coshocton and New Philadelphia.

“Franciscan is actually a great spot for volunteers for the campaign, so that’s one reason. The second reason is we are going to be in northeastern Ohio, so it’s easy to do it,” Vance said. But the conference’s actual subject matter and its speaker lineup shows how different, could be from traditional Republican candidates, including Sen. Rob Portman, whom Vance is running to replace.

Backers also argue social conservatives need to approach economic issues more like traditional political left through wide-scale investments in government social programs, like infrastructure, to benefit the broader public and/or gain working-class political support. Like elements of the left, they have criticized international free trade as resulting in socially harmful disinvestment in former manufacturing centers.
