Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced a “phased”, three-tier plan to re-open New Zealand to international travel beginning at the start of 2022. The plan also includes an increase in vaccination and a self-isolation pilot program.
The country will also speed up its vaccination rollout with all eligible ages able to book in their vaccine by September 1, Ardern said in a speech at a forum about reconnecting New Zealanders to the world. Ardern said New Zealand would not resume the Trans-Tasman bubble with Australia if Australia’s states were still experiencing outbreaks.“We were clear on that from the beginning and that is still our position.”
Referring to the escalating outbreak in New South Wales, Skegg said: “The Australian experience has been sobering - one case producing the disaster they have at the moment.” After a small uptick in Delta cases in June, NSW has struggled to implement effective lockdowns and tracing to prevent the outbreak from growing. The state has attracted criticism from neighbouring states given its inability to pull to get on top of the spread of coronavirus.
