WATCH LIVE: Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson, chairman Richard Goyder are speaking at a Senate inquiry; Jacinta Allan to become next Victorian premier, Ben Carroll named deputy; Virgin Australia CEO Jayne Hrdlicka says the decision to block Qatar Airways flights is a “lost opportunity”. Qantas chairman Richard Goyder and chief executive Vanessa Hudson have just stepped up at the Senate inquiry into the decision to block extra Qatar Airways flights to Australia.

Hudson, who took on the role this month with the early retirement of Alan Joyce, repeats her apology to customers after trust in the company plummeted due to low service standards, high airfares, restrictive flight credits and allegations it sold tickets on flights that were already cancelled. On slots, Hudson says the company supports the recommendations of the Harris review and agrees that Sydney Airport needs greater efficiency.

“We said the rest of the market should be given the chance to recover before such increases were considered. And that’s exactly what’s happening. “Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Delta, ANA and China Eastern are among the 50-plus airlines that are adding capacity back into Australia. And international fares have dropped considerably as a result.”

“It’s public knowledge that governments have rejected Qatar applications more than once over the past few years. Those who made those decisions are best placed to explain why.”
