Paterson's Hinchliffe Stadium is the new home of the New Jersey Jackals.

"This is a grand slam for Paterson," Mayor Andre Sayegh said of the New Jersey Jackals move to the newly-renovated Hinchcliffe Stadium for the 2023 season.Professional baseball is coming back to Paterson, back to Larry Doby’s hometown, back to historic Hinchcliffe Stadium that once hosted the Negro leagues and will now be the home of the New Jersey Jackals.

Sayegh, who has fought for years to revive the decrepit Hinchcliffe, couldn’t resist quoting the most famous line from the baseball movie “Field of Dreams.” Dorso introduced himself as a Paterson native who grew up watching professional wrestling bouts at the old Paterson armory, which was destroyed by fire in 2017. He’s an entrepreneur and the owner of 30 businesses, among them the Jackals, one of 16 teams in the Frontier League.

“The Jackals approached the University in early August asking to meet with us to discuss a termination agreement,” MSU spokesman Andrew Mees said in an email. “This was the first time we were made aware that the Jackals were looking to leave Yogi Berra Stadium. We were amenable to their request. We are pleased the Jackals have found a new home and wish them continued success.”

Built in 1932 on a bluff above the Great Falls, Hinchcliffe Stadium was once the center of sports and entertainment in Paterson. Musical acts ranging from Duke Ellington to Sly and the Family Stone played there; Lou Costello, a Paterson native, and his partner, Bud Abbott, performed their classic “Who’s on First?” comedy routine there.

Doby played at Hinchliffe during his high school years, before he was signed by the Cleveland Indians. Doby played his first game with the Indians on July 5, 1947, less than three months after Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers.
