JSO is hoping to fill 99 corrections officers, 29 police officers, and 78 civilian officers’ vacancies, many of whom would work as a 911 dispatcher.
One of the obstacles is finding people who are passionate about law enforcement, even with tensions that police officers are facing.
Lt. Chuck Ford, the unit commander of recruitment and selection, said starting this summer, new recruits from out of state will receive a $5,000 signing bonus due to a new initiative by Gov. Ron DeSantis to hire more law enforcement officers in Florida. “And what he was seeing throughout the country is we had departments that are defunding police and reduction of police and really not supporting police services, so what he offered them was a bonus,” Lt.
