Jacoby Brissett has fired the ball downfield like he’s Deshaun Watson in the first six games of the season, and it’s not working.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Jacoby Brissett vs. New England Patriots, October 16, 2022CLEVELAND, Ohio —

Brissett, who turned the ball over three times in Sunday’s 38-15 loss to the Patriots, has completed only 9 of 27 deep balls for 33.3%. What’s more, he’s thrown only one touchdown pass and four interceptions on those attempts, and is 33rd out of 37 QBs with a 44.6 rating in those instances. Against the Patriots, Brissett completed 3 of 11 deep attempts with two interceptions for a 22.0 rating. He struggled to connect with Amari Cooper, who caught only 4 of 12 targets for 44 yards, with a 15-yard TD catch that cut the Browns’ deficit to 24-15 with 6:17 left in the game. On the season, he’s found Cooper on only 3 of 10 attempts of 20 yards or more with one TD, for a 48.8 rating.

“You have to be explosive in the NFL,” Kevin Stefanski said. “You have to find ways to make explosive passes and make explosive runs. They can come in a bunch of different areas. They can come in different play types. They can come with throws over the middle of the field and throws outside of the numbers. We’re constantly searching for those explosives that the present defense is vulnerable to.
