Priority will be given to about 100 people still on Nauru after being processed in Australia’s offshore immigration centre there.
“It wasn’t the prison threat keeping me quiet. It was the fact that the deal would be torn up if I said anything. I got close anyway, let me tell you. But in the end I just knew if I was one of them and knew what was at stake, I’d want Lambie to hold the line,” she tweeted. “We’re hoping that will also mean the urgent release of the 51 people from detention, and that the government will focus on finding resettlement options for others and that won’t take eight or nine years as it’s taken with the NZ deal.”“This is a humiliating backflip for Scott Morrison who claimed as recently as 2018 that New Zealand’s generous offer to resettle refugees would see people smugglers restart their evil trade,” she said.
“With 112 refugees and asylum seekers today on Nauru, and some 1100 others in Australia, the arrangement will not be sufficient to cover the needs of all,” it said. Greens immigration spokesman Nick McKim said the news would be a “blessed, belated relief” for those who had been in limbo.
