David McCulloch, who has lived in Australia since he was 23 and was released from jail two years ago, will soon be deported after consenting to an order by Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton cancelling his permanent residency on character grounds.

he did not know what caused the latest twist. "I have no idea, I am trying not to be a conspiracy theorist," he said.

In a detailed statement of reasons provided to Mr McCulloch, Mr Dutton set out the material that informed his decision. The most serious is Mr McCulloch’s substantial criminal record. These include the founder of the Black Uhlans outlaw motorcycle gang John Higgs, Calabrian mafia members Pasquale Barbaro and Frank Madafferi and Geoffrey Armour, the gunman responsible for one of the last gangland hits, the 2009 murder of Des "Tuppence" Moran.

Mr McCulloch earned his jailhouse lawyer moniker – also the title of a popular podcast series he features in – by providing untrained legal advice to fellow inmates inside Barwon and across the prison system.
