The statue of James Cook in Randwick, Australia, has been vandalized again, with its nose and hand broken off and red paint splashed over the pedestal. This marks the second act of vandalism against the statue in a year. Police are investigating the incident and have seized several items from the scene. The attack has sparked condemnation from politicians and community members, who see it as an unacceptable form of political protest.

"Low lives in Randwick know no bounds, or have any reverence for great people of history, and will vandalise him to make a political point that he's not directly related to," he said." Vandalism has no place in public discussion," he said.

"Vandalism is an illegal act that does a disservice to progressing your cause, a disservice to the community and a disservice to reconciliation."Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said the attack as an "outrage"."In 2025 we should be proud of who we are and proud of the country we've created." It is the second time in a year the statue has been defaced. It was subjected to similar vandalism in February last year before being repaired.

Police investigating the graffiti say they have seized "a number of items" from the scene as they try to track down the vandals.Police believe about 20 statues were damaged in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens on Wendouree Parade yesterday between 2am and 5am.James Cook has become representative of the controversy about Australia Day, though the explorer is not historically related to the public holiday. He made landfall at what he named Botany Bay on April 29, 1770.
