James Franklin spoke after Wednesday's practice ahead of Penn State's game at Illinois.

Penn State head coach James Franklin greets his players as they take the field before the 63-7 win over Delaware on Sept. 9, 2023. Joe Hermitt | [email protected] State has been without three major contributors to open the 2023 season. And while Wednesday night offered a sign of hope that they’ll return to action sooner rather than later, James Franklin didn’t declare anyone ready to go.

In their place, Hakeem Beamon has started the first two games at defensive tackle with D’von Ellies and Zane Durant splitting duties next to him. Cam Miller has racked up reps as the No. 3 cornerback behind Kalen King and Johnny Dixon. And Zuriah Fisher has filled in as the No. 4 defensive end. Six freshmen who are considered locks to travel are linebacker Tony Rojas; defensive backs Elliot Washington, Zion Tracy and King Mack; defensive end Jameial Lyons; and quarterback Jaxon Smolik.

Franklin was brief when asked about the kicking situation after the Nittany Lions didn’t attempt a field goal against the Blue Hens: “It’s good. It’s been a week. It’s been good. They’ve kicked well.” — This will be the eighth consecutive season in which Penn State opens Big Ten play on the road. It’s also the 13th time in the last 14 seasons that’s been the case.
