GuardiansOfTheGalaxy3 director James Gunn debunks the rumor that The Suicide Squad actor Daniela Melchior is playing Moondragon in the MCU sequel.

James Gunn debunks another Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 rumor, this time regarding Moondragon. Gunn is hard at work on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film, which is billed as his last entry in the franchise as well as the final film for this current incarnation of the team. The film is set to open in theaters on May 5, 2023, fittingly six years from the date that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opened in theaters.

It was recently revealed that Daniela Melchior, who appeared as Ratcatcher II in Gunn's previous film The Suicide Squad, had been cast in a small role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Shortly after the casting announcement broke, rumors began circulating on who Melchoir would play in the upcoming MCU film. One popular theory is that she would play the character Moondragon, who was first introduced in the comics in 1973 and created by Bill Evertt, Mike Freidrich, and George Tuska.

Gunn is referencing back to October 2021 when rumors first circulated that Melchoir was cast as Moondragon in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, to which the director responded false. The false claim was not about Melchoir's involvement in the film but instead that she was attached to the play Moondragon specifically. While the director has not ruled out Moondragon from appearing in the movie, she will be played by another actress if she is in Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

While it is unclear who Melchior will play, it is likely a small cameo role. Gunn has often cast his friends and past collaborates in small cameo roles in his films like Nathan Fillion, Lloyd Kaufman, and Mikaela Hoover in Guardians of the Galaxy. However Melchoir could still play a Marvel character, just likely an obscure one as was the case with the original comics version of the Guardians of the Galaxy featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.
