“My take on it is that yes, I’ve been through it before, so I know what’s going to happen. Am I looking forward to it? No. In fact it makes me quite teary,” Nadine tails off, wiping away tears. “I know it’s going to be horrible. But I can deal with it.” While he jokes easily, James is reluctant to acknowledge fear in it all. He has been given 12-18 months to live, and is optimistic about what is possible, having already outlived many expectations. Professor Tom Powles, whom he co-founded Kidney Cancer UK with after his first bout, is treating James, and he cannot praise his help enough. Maybe this explains his persistent optimism through it all.

“I absolutely detest religion, but I do think everything happens for a reason. I’m upset about not having as long with Deenie as I would have hoped, but you see children with cancer. Why would somebody of my great age feel bad? James won’t be turning up to church anytime, but both of them have bought into spirituality. They have the world’s most famous spoon-bender on side.“He sends a heart and he sends messages. Sometimes they are in Israeli so I don’t even know what he says.“But I tell him about my tumours, and he says, ‘leave it to me,’ and he performs healing.”
