Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has issued an apology and pulled his new children’s fantasy book from shelves after it sparked criticism over its 'stereotyping' and 'triviliasing' depiction of Indigenous Australians.

In a detailed statement, NATSIEC’S chief executive Sharon Davis said the portrayal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander characters and practices were “irresponsible and damaging, reflecting a profound lack of understanding and respect”. Oliver and the publisher admitted to Guardian Australia that no consultation with any Indigenous groups or individuals was undertaken prior to the book hitting stores.
Penguin Random House UK also took responsibility for the error, saying it was due to “editorial oversight” that proper consultation did not occur.
