Her family confirmed the death in a statement on Saturday night.
“Unfortunately, Jane’s cancer recently returned after some time in remission, and she was admitted to hospital earlier this week. We wish to thank the staff at the Epworth Freemasons for their love and care of Jane over the last years and in particular over the past week.”Garrett leaves behind three children, Molly, 19, Sasha, 15, and Max, 10.
“We will remember Jane always for her contagious love of life and people; her intense compassion and the drive which made her a very fierce advocate for women and those most disadvantaged.”The Victorian Government has offered her a state funeral “to mark her significant contribution to Victoria”. Garrett entered Parliament in the lower house seat of Brunswick in 2010 and was promoted to cabinet in 2014 as a rising star, viewed as a potential Labor leader, before being permanently sidelined in 2016.
