Mueller was later named the university’s William Rainey Harper professor of English, and in the 1980s, she became chair of the university’s English department. She also was the editor of the academic journal Modern Philology in the 1990s. “She had a remarkable capacity to see clearly what was before her — a poem of John Donne’s, an article submitted to Modern Philology, a student paper, an academic tenure case. Not much got past her,” Chandler said.
