WATCH LIVE: Two former White House aides are expected to testify during today’s hearing into the Jan. 6 Capitol Riots
Committee chairman Bennie Thompson is speaking via videolink to open proceedings.
“He commanded a mob, a mob he knew was heavily armed violent, and angry to march on the Capital to try to stop the peaceful transfer of power,” he said. Trump told Fox News ahead of the hearing she was involved in taking archival photographs of renovations at the White House when the riots began, which was one of her obligations as first lady.“This is a very significant undertaking and requires great care, attention to detail, and concentration – both in planning and execution,” she said.
Trump told Fox News she had been in the dark about the attack and Grisham had “failed to provide insight and information” that day. This was up from 33 per cent in a poll conducted six weeks ago when the congressional probe first began examining the testimony of witnesses.Trump continues to have support in the party and regularly hints he will run for president again in 2024, however one-third of Republicans surveyed thought he should refrain from doing so.
Former deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger and press aide Sarah Matthews, who both resigned in the aftermath of the riots, are expected to front the committee and give live testimony. Pottinger found his way to the White House through US army lieutenant general Michael Flynn. Pottinger, who studied China in college and moved to the country to work as a reporter for Reuters andjoined the Marines in 2005 and deployed to Iraq as an intelligence officer. He later worked in Afghanistan where he met Flynn.
