A toppled reindeer? A window of pink balloons? These images explore Dana Stirling’s depression - and remind us how ‘beauty and sorrow walk together’

‘This project centres on a question I’ve asked myself countless times: why am I sad? These images embody that exploration. It’s not about finding an answer but about holding space for the question itself, a reflection on how sadness shapes who we are and how we navigate the world’‘Each photograph became a window into my soul, a reflection of the inner dialogue I dared not speak aloud.

It isolated us, magnifying feelings of sadness and anxiety while often leaving them unspoken. Through this work, I hope to break the silence, encouraging vulnerability and dialogue as essential steps toward healing. This is an invitation for others to reflect on their own experiences, encouraging a conversation about the ways we confront sadness and find resilience through art and connection’‘The happy face, a symbol of joy and optimism, appears often in my work – but not as you’d expect.
