Australia and Japan held defence talks in Tokyo where they hope to agree on more detail about joint military training exercises and stepping up security cooperation.

| Australia and Japan pledged on Wednesday to step up defence co-operation to address the “severe” security situation in the Indo-Pacific, amid concerns over China’s rising assertiveness in the region.

“As the security environment becomes even more severe, the security and defence co-operation between Japan and Australia has never been stronger and more important than now. I look forward to further enhancing our defence co-operation.” Mr Marles and Mr Kishi also held talks on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore at the weekend and decided to hold further discussions in Tokyo given growing concerns about China. It is Mr Marles’ first overseas visit as deputy prime minister.
