A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 shook southwestern Japan on Monday, triggering tsunami alerts that were later lifted before midnight. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported the quake occurred around 9:19 PM local time, registering a lower five on the Japan ese seismic scale of seven in Miyazaki, Shintomi, and Takanabe in Miyazaki Prefecture .
The epicenter of the tremor was located just off the Hyuganada Sea in Miyazaki Prefecture at a depth of 30 kilometers, with a latitude of 31.8 degrees north and a longitude of 131.6 degrees east. \Although no immediate reports of damage or injuries were recorded, tsunami advisories were issued for Miyazaki Prefecture as well as nearby Kochi Prefecture in Shikoku island. The waters detected at Miyazaki Port measured 20 centimeters high, according to public broadcaster NHK TV. As a precautionary measure, residents in some coastal areas were advised to evacuate, but the alerts were subsequently lifted shortly before midnight. \ After thorough investigations, the JMA determined that the quake did not warrant precautionary measures related to seismic activity in the Nankai Trough.
