Tokyo has emphasized that its bid for Australia's $10 billion general frigate program is about forging a strategic partnership, not just pursuing a defense export market. Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is vying against Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems to build 11 new frigates for the Royal Australian Navy, with the first three to be built offshore and the remaining eight in Western Australia. Japan proposes an upgraded version of its Mogami 30 FFM, while Germany offers the proven Meko A-200. Both contenders boast advanced capabilities, but Japan highlights the Mogami's speed, stealth, and adaptability to Australia's specific needs.

Tokyo has declared its bid to build Australia ’s next fleet of warships is not about pursuing a defence export market, but rather about securing a strategic partnership with a “very special country”. Last month Japan ’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was shortlisted alongside Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems for the Royal Australia n Navy’s $10 billion general frigate program. Australia plans to acquire 11 new general-purpose frigates to replace the ageing fleet of Anzac-class ships.

“We believe Mogami has the best capability among the candidates…including the distance they can operate, and the speed and also the capability for both attacking and also defence.” If the Mogami is selected, it would be the first time Japan has sold a warship to another country. Nishiwaki says that lack of experience should not count against the Japanese bid, describing Mitsubishi as a global company, with a history of cooperation with other countries.
