The legendary Butoh group couples slow, precise movement with dramatic poses and facial expressions that explore taboo subjects and evoke the horrors of war.
Sankai Juku was formed in 1975 by Ushio Amagatsu, who remains artistic director. When the company caught on in Europe, Théâtre de la Ville in Paris became its benefactor, commissioning 17 productions to date., who remains artistic director. Word of the company’s uniquely theatrical style spread in the early ‘80s to Europe, where the company performed at festivals in France, Spain and Scotland and took up residence in Paris.
While critics have expressed mixed feelings about the company from the beginning — questioning what its approach to Butoh adds up to — Sankai Juku received a lot of media attention for its “hangings,” outdoor performances in which a dancer hung upside down from a tall building., which is also touring to Stanford University, the University of Richmond, Jacob’s Pillow in Massachusetts and New York’s Joyce Theater.
